How the Ulkaa Edu Rank works

Overview

Sir Salimullah Medical College (formerly Mitford Hospital Medical College) is a public medical college in Dhaka. It traces its origin to 1875, when the Dacca Medical School began work. It teaches the MBBS degree and is affiliated with University of Dhaka.

Ulkaa's medical college table will publish once enough public data is available, so this college does not have an Ulkaa rank yet. Until then this page sticks to published facts, each with its year, and says plainly where a figure has not been checked against an official source. The official website is https://ssmcmh.gov.bd/.

The college began as the Dacca Medical School, which started work on 15 June 1875. Wikipedia describes it as the oldest medical institution in Bangladesh, and Ulkaa records 1875 as the founding year. A foundation stone for the academic building was laid in April 1887, and the building was opened in September 1889.

The school stopped its LMF course in 1957. In 1962 it became a medical college under the name Mitford Medical College, and in 1963 it took the present name, which honours Khwaja Salimullah, Nawab of Dhaka. The first full MBBS undergraduate batch began on 8 February 1973. Postgraduate courses were introduced in 2002, and a dental unit followed around 2011 and 2012, with the first BDS students enrolled then.

Admission

Entry to the MBBS course at a public medical college goes through the national MBBS and BDS admission test, held once a year under the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) of the Ministry of Health. For the 2025-26 session the test was held on 12 December 2025. Prothom Alo reported 122,632 applicants and a pass mark of 40 out of 100, with 66.57 percent passing. Government colleges offered 5,645 seats that year, 5,100 for MBBS and 545 for BDS.

The test score alone does not decide a place. As Prothom Alo described it, the merit ranking adds the SSC GPA multiplied by 8, the HSC GPA multiplied by 12 and the test marks, with deductions for some repeat candidates. Candidates then list their preferred colleges and seats are filled by merit and preference. Results are posted on dgme.gov.bd, dghs.gov.bd and result.dghs.gov.bd.

Sir Salimullah Medical College fills its seats through this central system. Which seats go to which colleges is decided each year from the merit list and the preferences that candidates submit. Rules change between sessions, so check the current circular before you apply.

Programs

The main programme is the MBBS. Ulkaa lists 225 MBBS seats for 2025, taken from the medical college list on Wikipedia and not yet checked against the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) or the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC). Seat numbers are fixed each year, so treat this as a guide and confirm it in the current admission circular.

The college is affiliated with University of Dhaka. Ulkaa records no verified bed count yet.

Key figures

Research and campus life

The college is paired with Mitford Hospital, which Wikipedia calls the oldest hospital in the country. The campus sits in Old Dhaka on the bank of the Buriganga; the college area is about 2.8 acres and the hospital complex about 12.8 acres. Ulkaa has no verified bed count for this hospital yet.

For a medical student the attached hospital is where clinical training happens, so the hospital's size and wards matter as much as the lecture halls.
