How the Ulkaa Edu Rank works

Overview

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, usually called BUET, is a public university in the Palashi area of Dhaka. It traces its origins to 1876 and has a compact urban campus of about 91 acres.

Rankings

  • QS World University Rankings 2027: band 711-720, national rank 2. The 2026 edition placed it in 761-770.
  • QS Asia University Rankings 2026: 165, national rank 3.
  • THE World University Rankings 2027: band 1001-1200.
  • THE Asia University Rankings 2026: band 301-350, national rank 1.
  • Webometrics 2024: world rank 1416, national rank 3.
  • Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027: position 1 in Bangladesh with a score of 96. For positions 1 to 14 the position reflects Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment. BUET admits through an HSC GPA screen followed by its own test, so the applicants-per-seat indicator is treated as neutral for it rather than scored.

The 2023 data year records 7,814 students and 804 teachers, 370 of whom hold a PhD.

BUET began in 1876 as the Dacca Survey School. It was upgraded to the Ahsanullah School of Engineering in 1908 and became Ahsanullah Engineering College in 1948.

In 1962 it received university status as the East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology. After Bangladesh's independence in 1971 it took its present name.

Admission

Undergraduate admission is highly competitive. Applicants first pass a screen based on their combined HSC GPA in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and the screened group then sits the BUET admission test. The university offers about 1,300 undergraduate seats a year; the stored figure is 1,309 seats in both 2023 and 2025.

In 2025 there were 10,351 applicants, or about 7.9 per seat, up from 6,039 applicants and 4.6 per seat in 2023. The ratio counts only those who applied after the GPA screen was announced, so read it together with the screening rule.

Seat numbers, dates and screening rules are published in the official admission circular each year. Check it before applying, and keep your HSC subject results ready, since the screen depends on them.

Programs

BUET is organised into six faculties with 18 departments, and it also hosts eight institutes for postgraduate study. The faculties cover chemical and materials engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, science, mechanical engineering, and architecture and planning. The science faculty teaches chemistry, mathematics and physics, mainly as supporting subjects for the engineering degrees.

Ulkaa lists 13 programmes for the university, including:

  • BSc in Civil Engineering, with MSc/M.Engg and PhD programmes
  • BSc, Master's and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering
  • Undergraduate and MSc/M.Engg programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Undergraduate study in Mechanical Engineering
  • B.Arch, MS Arch/M.Arch/MLA and a PhD in Architecture

The QS 2026 subject tables name BUET first among Bangladeshi universities in several fields: petroleum engineering (101-150), architecture and built environment (201-260), electrical and electronic engineering (301-350), mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering (351-400), computer science and information systems (451-500) and mathematics (501-600). In physics and astronomy it is second nationally (601-675).

Research and campus life

OpenAlex records 7,618 works over the five years to 2025, with 2,323 of the 2025 works in engineering and 754 in computer science. Citations per work over five years were 10.07 in 2025, against 12.97 in 2024 and 16.08 in 2023. The mean two-year citedness was 3.85 in 2026, and the five-year citation count was 76,749 in 2025.

About 33 percent of 2025 works had an international co-author. The OpenAlex h-index was 214 in 2026.

Graduate research runs through the departments and the eight postgraduate institutes, with several research centres listed by the university. For subject-level strength see the QS 2026 entries in the programmes section.

The campus is in the city, which keeps students close to the rest of Dhaka. Nine residential halls, named after figures from Bengali history, house students. The central library holds over 142,000 items, and the university runs teaching laboratories and research facilities across the campus.

The university also lists research centres and teaching laboratories that students use through their departments. Course content is technical, so studio, laboratory and design work make up a large part of a typical week for engineering and architecture students. Check the official site for the current list of clubs and societies.

The campus covers about 91 acres, so departments, halls and the library sit within one urban site.
