QS vs THE vs Ulkaa Edu Rank Explained for Bangladeshi Students

What QS, THE, the Asia editions and Ulkaa Edu Rank measure, how bands and ties work, and how Bangladeshi students can use them together.

Four rankings matter most to Bangladeshi applicants, and they answer different questions. QS World University Rankings 2027 and THE World University Rankings 2027 place universities on a global scale, mostly on reputation and research. The Asia editions do the same for the region. The Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 compares only Bangladeshi universities and gives student demand a quarter of its score. Read them together, and never read any of them as a verdict on a single programme.

What each ranking measures

QS World University Rankings is compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds. Its public methodology combines academic and employer reputation surveys, the ratio of faculty to students, citations per faculty member, and measures of international students and staff. Newer editions add an international research network, employment outcomes and sustainability. Reputation surveys carry a large share, which is why long-established, well-known universities tend to do well.

THE World University Rankings is compiled by Times Higher Education. It groups its indicators into five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. Reputation surveys, citation data, income and the share of international students and staff all feed in. THE also publishes a status called Reporter for institutions that supplied data but did not meet the criteria for a rank.

QS Asia and THE Asia apply a regional version of each organisation's method to Asian universities only. A university can sit far higher in Asia than in the world table because it competes against a smaller pool.

Ulkaa Edu Rank is different in kind. It does not survey anyone. It is computed from published data on Bangladeshi universities, using a fixed methodology (version 2027.1) that is public.

How often they publish and which editions Ulkaa shows

Each ranking publishes once a year, but the months differ, so two tables you compare may be a year apart in the data behind them. The editions stored on Ulkaa Campus are these:

  • QS World University Rankings 2027, published 18 June 2026, with 13 Bangladeshi universities. The 2026 edition (published 19 June 2025) lists 15 and the 2025 edition (4 June 2024) also lists 15.
  • THE World University Rankings 2027, published 30 September 2026, with 35 Bangladeshi entries, of which 25 carry a band and 10 are Reporter institutions. The 2026 edition (9 October 2025) has 23 entries, 4 of them Reporter.
  • QS Asia 2026, published 5 November 2025, with 46 Bangladeshi universities.
  • THE Asia 2026, published 25 April 2026, with 19.
  • Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, published 5 October 2026 with data to 2 October 2026, covering 78 universities: 35 public and 43 private.

Always name the edition when you quote a position. "QS rank" on its own is incomplete, because the 2027 and 2025 tables differ.

Who appears in the global tables

In QS World University Rankings 2027, University of Dhaka is at joint 600 and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology at 711-720. North South University is at 901-950. BRAC University and Daffodil International University share 1001-1200. The remaining eight are in the 1401+ band, among them Jahangirnagar University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Bangladesh Agricultural University.

THE World University Rankings 2027 looks different. American International University-Bangladesh, Daffodil International University, Jahangirnagar University and North South University share the 801-1000 band. Eight universities, among them the University of Dhaka, BUET and BRAC University, share 1001-1200. Others sit in 1201-1400, 1401-1600 and 1801-2000, and ten institutions are listed as Reporter with no band.

In the Asia tables the spread is wider. QS Asia 2026 gives the University of Dhaka position 132, North South University 149, BUET 165, Daffodil International University 221 and BRAC University 260. THE Asia 2026 places BUET and the University of Dhaka together at 301-350, and North South University and Daffodil International University at 351-400.

How bands and ties work

Beyond the top of a table, QS and THE stop printing exact positions because the score gaps are too small to separate universities with confidence. Instead you see a band such as 1001-1200, or an open-ended band such as 1401+. Everyone in a band shares it. THE lists the members of a band alphabetically, so order inside a band means nothing.

QS also stores ties with an equals sign. "=600" means joint 600: more than one university holds that place. In the stored QS 2027 table the University of Dhaka is the Bangladeshi entry at joint 600.

Ulkaa Campus adds a national position to each global row, meaning the place among Bangladeshi universities in that edition. It is counted the competition way, as in 1, 2, 2, 4. In THE 2027, four universities share national position 1 because they share a band, and the next group starts at 5. In QS 2027, BRAC University and Daffodil International University are both national 4, and all eight universities in 1401+ are national 6. A shared number is a tie, not a mistake.

Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 shows exact positions from 1 to 30 and bands after that: 31-40, 41-50, 51-75, 76-100 and 101+.

Why one university has different positions

The same university can be first in one table and fifth in another, and nothing is wrong. Several things cause it.

  • The rankings measure different things. A reputation-heavy table and a table built on admission data reward different strengths.
  • The pool differs. Only universities that supply data, or meet an eligibility rule, enter a table.
  • Band ties compress the national position. Jahangirnagar University is national 1 in THE World University Rankings 2027, because its band is shared by four universities, yet national 6 in QS 2027, where it sits in the open 1401+ band with seven others.
  • The edition differs. QS Asia 2026 and THE World 2027 were published almost a year apart.

The University of Dhaka shows the pattern clearly. It is national 1 in QS 2027, QS Asia 2026 and THE Asia 2026, national 5 in THE 2027, and position 2 in Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027.

Why Ulkaa Edu Rank exists

Global tables answer how a university looks to an international audience of academics, employers and researchers. They say little about what a Bangladeshi applicant actually faces: how hard it is to get in, how many students choose it, how many of its teachers hold a doctorate. Many universities do not appear in QS or THE at all, and a band such as 1401+ separates almost nobody.

Ulkaa Edu Rank was built to fill that gap, and its published methodology gives its twelve indicators these weights:

  • Student demand, 25 percent in total: applicants per seat (13), first-year intake (6) and, for private universities, growth in intake (6). Demand is compared within each segment, so a private university with strong enrolment is not scored against public admission competition.
  • Research output (15) and citations per work (10), from OpenAlex.
  • Teachers with a PhD (10) and students per teacher (10), from UGC data.
  • QS and THE recognition (10), so the global tables are one input, not the whole story.
  • International co-authorship, accredited programmes, programme breadth and web presence (Webometrics), 5 each.

When a pillar has no public data for a university, the score is renormalised and the page says so, rather than hiding the gap.

What positions 1 to 14 mean

In Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, positions 1 to 14 reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment, compiled by Ulkaa from data collected from the universities: entrance competition, applicants and merit. They run from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology at 1 and the University of Dhaka at 2 to Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University at 14. All other positions are computed from the published Ulkaa methodology 2027.1 using the weights above.

The methodology document names its own limits. Applicants per seat exists for only eight admission-test universities, and many demand scores rest on UGC intake figures from 2023 because a newer UGC report was not yet out. Engineering universities screen applicants before the test, so their applications per seat look lower than at general universities.

How to use the three together

Use the rankings in order of the question you are asking.

  1. To see how a university is regarded abroad, look at QS and THE, and prefer the Asia tables for finer detail.
  2. To compare universities inside Bangladesh, start with Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027, then check QS World University Rankings 2027 for outside confirmation.
  3. If a university is unlisted in a global table, do not read that as a weakness. It may not have been submitted or eligible.

If two sources disagree, read the methodology rather than averaging the numbers. A university that is strong in Asia tables but modest in Ulkaa Edu Rank may simply have a different mix of reputation and admission data.

What rankings cannot tell you

A university rank is an average over thousands of students and dozens of departments. It does not tell you the quality of the programme you want, the teachers you would meet, or whether the department has working labs. The QS subject rankings 2026 show how much a subject can differ from the institution. BUET is at 711-720 overall in QS 2027, at 451-500 in computer science and at 101-150 in petroleum engineering in the 2026 subject tables.

Before you apply, check the programme itself: its accreditation, its intake, its recent graduates and the admission rules for your session. The Campus pages for each university show those details, and the methodology page explains every number behind Ulkaa Edu Rank.

Frequently asked questions

How many Bangladeshi universities are in QS World University Rankings 2027?

Thirteen, according to the edition published on 18 June 2026. The University of Dhaka is at joint 600 and BUET is at 711-720.

What does "=600" mean in QS?

It means joint 600: more than one university shares that position. QS uses the equals sign to mark ties.

What does a band like 1001-1200 mean?

The university is somewhere in that range and shares the band with others. THE lists band members alphabetically, so order inside a band carries no meaning.

Why is a university national 1 in one ranking and lower in another?

Each ranking measures different things, covers a different set of universities and may come from a different year. Tied bands also compress national positions, as with Jahangirnagar University in THE World 2027 and QS 2027.

What does Ulkaa Edu Rank measure?

Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 uses twelve published indicators, with student demand worth 25 percent, plus research, teachers with a PhD, students per teacher, QS and THE recognition and other items. The full list is on the methodology page.

What do positions 1 to 14 in Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027 mean?

They reflect Ulkaa's admission competitiveness assessment, compiled from data collected from the universities. All other positions are computed from the published Ulkaa methodology 2027.1.

Does a university rank tell me if a programme is good?

No. A rank describes a whole institution. Check the accreditation, intake and admission rules of the specific programme.
