The university was founded in 1994 as AMA International University Bangladesh, a joint venture between a Philippine institution, AMA Computer University, and the Bangladeshi founder Anwarul Abedin. Regular classes began in 1995, and the name changed to American International University-Bangladesh in 2001.

Over the years the university worked from rented premises in Mohakhali and then Banani before moving to its own campus in Kuril in 2017.

Applicants sit an admission test with written and oral parts. International applicants may be asked for English test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS, and for GRE, GMAT or SAT scores where a programme requires them.

Requirements, deadlines and the semester calendar change from year to year, so confirm them with the admissions office or on aiub.edu before you apply. This page does not list tuition figures.

The test covers mathematics, English and other subjects, and an applicant must pass both the written part and the viva.

AIUB teaches through five faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Health and Life Sciences, and Science and Technology.

Ulkaa lists 24 programmes for the 2027 edition. Undergraduate options include:

• Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science and Computer Network and Cyber Security
• Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Industrial and Production Engineering
• Architecture, Pharmacy, Microbiology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
• Business Administration, Economics, English and Law (LL.B)

Postgraduate programmes include MBA, Executive MBA, an MSc in Computer Science, Masters in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Master of Engineering in Telecommunication and a Masters of Laws.

Accreditation registers for 2026 hold five entries for AIUB: three from BAETE (engineering), one from BAC and one from the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh. Some validity dates on the registers may have lapsed, so check the current status with the university.

English is the medium of instruction. The academic year has two regular semesters, Fall and Spring, of 17 weeks each, and an optional 12-week Summer semester. Wikipedia lists AIUB as the official education partner of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Bangladesh Football Federation, and gives 2.50 as the minimum CGPA to graduate from any undergraduate or graduate programme.

OpenAlex records 3,567 works from AIUB over the five years to 2025, with 26,351 citations in that window (7.39 per work) and an h-index of 99 as of 2026. About 37 percent of recent papers have an international co-author.

The university publishes its own journals, including AJSE, which is indexed in Scopus, and AJBE, and runs a business and economics working paper series.

The Kuril campus covers about 12 acres, with roughly 1.3 million square feet of built space. Its best-known feature is the central building topped by a glass-covered globe.

As a private university in a large city, AIUB draws mostly commuting students. The university reported 6,282 first-year admissions in 2023, up from 4,511 in 2022 and 2,016 in 2021, so the campus has grown quickly in recent years. Check the official website for clubs, events and student services.
