How the Ulkaa Edu Rank works

Overview

East West University (EWU) is a private university in Dhaka, established in 1996 under the Private University Act of 1992. Its campus is in Aftab Nagar, Dhaka, and the university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.

Where it stands

  • Ulkaa Edu Rank 2027: position 21 among Bangladeshi universities, computed from the published methodology.
  • THE World University Rankings 2027: band 1801-2000, which is 24th among Bangladeshi institutions in that edition.
  • QS Asia University Rankings 2026: 491, which is 16th nationally in that edition.
  • THE Asia University Rankings 2026: band 801+, 19th nationally.

The latest enrolment figures stored for 2023 show 12,220 students and 517 teachers, of whom 223 hold a PhD. The university admitted 4,492 new students in 2023, up from 4,119 in 2022 and 2,916 in 2021. Ulkaa lists 19 programmes for the 2027 edition, and six of them held professional accreditation in 2026: five engineering programmes accredited by BAETE and one pharmacy programme accredited by the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh.

The university's own site is ewubd.edu.

EWU opened in 1996 at 43 Mohakhali, Dhaka, as one of the early private universities set up after the 1992 Act. It stayed in Mohakhali for its first sixteen years. In May 2012 it moved to its present campus at A/2, Jahurul Islam Avenue, Jahurul Islam City, Aftab Nagar.

The move came with a steady rise in students. Ministry data stored by Ulkaa shows enrolment of 12,195 in 2021, 13,391 in 2022 and 12,220 in 2023, so the student body has stayed above twelve thousand for several years. EWU has not used a different official name, so there is no former name to record.

The university took part in research networks such as the Trade Knowledge Network and SANDEE, and in 2002 it organised the International Conference on Computer and Information Technology.

Admission

EWU admits students at both undergraduate and graduate level. Applications are made to the university directly through its admission office, and requirements, deadlines and any test or interview are set in the circular for each semester. Because the academic year has three semesters, there is more than one intake each year.

Before applying, check three things on the official site: the minimum qualifications for your chosen programme, the application window for the semester you want, and whether your programme has extra conditions. Engineering and pharmacy programmes in particular carry accreditation rules that can affect eligibility.

Ulkaa does not state tuition figures on this page. Fee tables are covered separately with sourced current-year data.

Programs

EWU teaches through three faculties: Science and Engineering, Business and Economics, and Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. It awards bachelor's degrees (BA, BBA, BSc, B.Pharm) and master's degrees (MBA, MA, MS, M.Pharm).

The departments listed for Ulkaa include Business Administration, Economics, English, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, and Pharmacy. Engineering degrees include BSc programmes in Civil Engineering, CSE, EEE, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, and Information and Communication Engineering.

Teaching follows the North American open credit system, and the academic year runs in three semesters. That means a student takes a set number of credits each term and can adjust the load, rather than following a fixed annual syllabus. The university also lists accreditation links with ACBSP for business, ACCA, the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh and the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh.

The student-teacher picture is worth noting. With 12,220 students and 517 teachers in 2023, the ratio is about 24 students per teacher on the stored figures. About 43 percent of teachers held a PhD that year.

Research and campus life

EWU's campus sits inside a residential and commercial area of Aftab Nagar in east Dhaka, so most students commute from the city rather than living in halls. Student clubs run around academic subjects, culture and community work, and the university supports entrepreneurship through its own centres where students can develop business ideas.

Because the credit system lets students arrange their own timetable, many combine study with internships or part-time work. The university's faculty also take part in outside research projects, including work linked to the Trade Knowledge Network and SANDEE, which gives some students exposure to applied research.

For current clubs, events and facilities, the university's official site is the place to check, as these change each year.
